There is a gap between logical understanding and emotional experience. Sometimes the gap appears over time when we can digest and backfill into the void. Other times, the gap comes all at once and we are left with a chasm between our logic and emotion.
I joined the team from the non-profit Aspire Globally in Nairobi, Kenya where they fill the gap of extreme poverty through faith, sports, and education to create caring communities for children to thrive. With scholarships to better schools, safe places to study and grow, and structure on the soccer field, Aspire is changing the trajectory of Kenya one heart at a time.
Walking through Mathare, often called an “informal settlement” rather than a slum, created a gap in me that needed filling. I knew what to expect, I understood the situation, but the experience is all together different. Thanks to incredible individuals and communities burgeoning with hope, I found enough solace to steady myself. But this wasn’t about me and it’s probably not about you. See for yourself, and don’t forget to mind the gap.
